The French Lycée in Prague offers diverse linguistic programs, diversified around French, Czech and English. It therefore has native teachers in these three languages.
Teaching is organized along two curriculums.
A curriculum in which French prevails, with English and Czech classes.
A French-English bilingual curriculum with schedule parity, with Czech classes.
Starting from 4th grade, this section becomes an International section.
The integration of the pupil to one curriculum or the other when he/she enters the French Lycée in Prague depends on the linguistic profile of the family and on his/her abilities.
There is no prerequisite to enter francophone classes. However, mastering either French or English is mandatory to enter the bilingual section.
Non-francophone and non-anglophone families who are willing to enroll their child in the bilingual section may request it after one year spent in the French section in PS or MS.
Pupils whose native language is Czech receive lessons in the Czech language which allow them to meet the national criteria for the Czech educational system (two hours a week in pre-school and CP (Cours préparatoire) rising to three hours per week at the other levels). All other pupils receive Czech language lessons beginning in CP (one hour per week at this level rising to two hours per week at the other levels).
At the end of the third cycle, non-native pupils have the possibility of taking an examination in French (organized jointly by the French Lycée in Prague and the IFP) and/or in English (organized jointly by the French Lycée in Prague and the British Council – Cambridge Language Test Assessment), as recognition of their abilities at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Non-francophone pupils
One of the specificities of the French Lycée in Prague is to integrate non-francophone children at every level of Primary school (with the exception of the class of CP). This integration is undertaken by the class teacher, but these pupils are supported by a specialist teacher of FLS (Français Langue de Scolarisation, or French for Educational Purposes).
This teacher helps these pupils to acquire the basics of the language, allowing them to begin to communicate and to gain access as quickly as possible to the methods necessary for learning in class.
Non-anglophone pupils
Since September 2015, the French Lycée in Prague proposes integration in bilingual CE1 and CE2 to non-anglophone children.
In either case, the project is examined with the family when they join the school according to their child’s school records.
